 Notes from the Dugout-

No Fair Ball!

With this year's MLB All-Star game rapidly approaching,(July 11, in Pittsburgh) it seems only appropiate to make some observations from a fan's perspective of some of the events of the first-half season. I will go with a bullet point,(or express-o shot, as it is referred to on the site) type format in my first half analysis.

  • Through Wednesday, The American League held a 127-75 record in head-to-head contests against The National League in inter-league play this season, easily the most dominant record either league has had since the start of inter-league play in 1997.  Many these games have failed to even be competitive.  Just look at the entire White-Sox/Cardinals series for evidence.
  • Boy, speaking of Chicago, at least they have the White Sox to pull for, but are the Cubs absolutely awful or what? I watched nearly that entire series with the Twins last weekend and it was comical, if not painful watching how inept the Cubs were throughout that entire series.  I predicted a sweep, considering they were facing one of the hottest teams in baseball and two of the best pitchers in the game, but I have never seen a team look so lost as the Cub appeared to be last weekend at the Dome.  It will continue to be a long season for Baker's crew on the north side.
  • Speaking of the Twins, for the second time in three years, they might end up being the best team to miss out on post-season play.  In any other division, including the mighty A.L. East, they would be right there in the mix of things.  Unfortunately, they happen to play in the best division in the majors.  I think they still have a fighting chance, if either the Tigers or the Sox were to falter.  They would be an extremely dangerous team, if they were to make it in, especially in a short series and with those pitchers.
  • I'm probably in the minority, but I like the whole "home-field advantage decided in the All-Star game" format.  If only, because it forces the managers and players to treat this as something more then just an exhibition game. I think the fans deserve to see a game that really matters, and where the players actually have something more than pride to play for.
  • Speaking of the All-Star game, has there ever been a season where the outcome was less in doubt? I mean, who still thinks the National Leaguers will actually win the game? When you take into account their performance in inter-leage play, combined with the fact that, right now The American League appears to be the younger, healthier and more star-filled league, it shouldn't be surprising if the A.L team wins once again.  Infact, I may be wrong, but I don't believe the N.L. has won the game since they added the "home-field" rule.  Of course, with the juggled rosters you can never tell who might pull out the victory,  but this will be the N.L's last chance to save face, until the World Series, at least.
  • On that note, I would like to close out by reminding my readers and/or baseball fans to check back next week as I post the All-Star line-ups, as I would set them.  There is sure to be some debating about that one, but like always, I welcome your comments.  Look for that posting next Wednesday as part of the 4th of July Special's Week.  Hope to hear from you, until next time.
You decide-
Should the MLB All-Star Game be for home-field advantage in the World Series?
