  • I'm trying a new feature here at the Cafe this summer called "Tunin' Weekends", where the readers who stop by are asked to select their favorite song from a list of choices and the song with the most votes by the end of the work week will play here through the weekend.
  • The first installment is songs from the year 1980 (the year yours truly was born).  So make sure you check out the list of songs this week and help decide which song to play.  Voting ends Friday afternoon and the winning song will begin playing by Friday evening.  I look forward to hearing some feedback if this feature takes off like I hope.

  • The recent additions or what I like to call "upgrades" to the cafe will allow for the opportunity to expand on the topics of conversation around here.  There remains a lot of un chartered territory in terms of video content and its potential relevance to the cafe in setting a course for new directions.
  • One such direction is in classic footage.  It's no secret that I have a great appreciation for history so from time to time I will try and dig up some lost video gems or late-breaking footage and present them here in relation to a story or posting.  One such example is in the latest Brewing Issues piece covering the Benoit murders and it's media coverage (including a clip from the O'Reilly Factor).  If you haven't yet, I recommend you check it out at the top of page two.

  • There has been some speculation that because viewer ship has been down here, that I am considering closing down this site, well rest assured that nothing could be further from the truth.  While it's true that splitting time between two sites has limited the number of updates on some weeks, it can't be stated enough that I am still as committed as ever in posting new and innovative articles here at the original JSM Cafe.
  • There is definitely a core audience that have a sort of "brand loyalty" to the Cafe and who don't follow the events at Cafe:Sports and vice-versa.  My philosophy on this is that there is nothing wrong with creating a little friendly competition between two successful, albeit contrastingly distinct sites. I say choose your side (or read them both) so long as both continue to serve their function which is to entertain and inform.  I think they both do equally, but that is only my opinion.  Like a parent, I can't pick between two children, I just want both to be successful.

  • On a personal note, this will be an exciting week for myself for a number of reasons.  My 4 month old niece arrived yesterday afternoon and handled her first ever flight quite well.  I'm sure she will find the peaceful tranquility of Minneapolis a welcome relief from the loud bustle of New York City.
  • Another high point will be having the privilege of hosting my graduation party this weekend in which many of my closest family and friends will be present.  This is a rare opportunity for me to gather the people I am close to together in one place in the hopes of having a fun time.  I am looking forward to the event with a mixture of anxiety and enthusiasm.  I hope to make this weekend not about me, but about celebrating with those that have seen me through the ups and the downs and I can't state enough how much their support has and continues to mean to me.
  • On that note I want to wish everyone a great weekend and I'll have some comments next week on my grad party and on other general topics of interest, take care.  -JSM.

Hope your Friday goes better than these 160.

Top 10 Friday the 13 films:

  1. Friday the 13 (1980): You can't beat the original & it's the only one in which you don't know who the killer is in advance. (It was his mother.)
  2. Friday the 13 part 3 (1983): It was the only film in the series that was shot in 3-D.  Also the 1st one where we see Jason in the infamous hockey mask.
  3. Friday the 13 part 2 (1982): Solid for a sequel, the only one where Jason wears that forgettable corn sack with one eye hole over his head.
  4. Friday the 13 part 4 (1984): He tries to kill Corey Feldman in this one, but is unsuccessful.  This was supposed to be the "Final Chapter," but obviously wasn't or I couldn't do the top 10.
  5. Friday the 13 part 6: The most action-packed one in the series with maybe the most explosions.
  6. Freddy vs. Jason: I'll count this one since Jason wins, though he looks more like a scare-crow here than in his earlier films.  Perhaps showing his age.
  7. Friday the 13 part 5: My least favorite of the early ones; this is the one where the murders occur at the halfway house.  I think this one has the largest body count, as well.
  8. Friday the 13 part 7: Jason fights a girl with psychic powers; which totally kills the realism of the series.
  9. Jason Takes Manhattan: They tried something new and it didn't work so well.  Boy, has New York sure changed since 1989! Thanks Rudy.
  10. Jason X: Have only seen it once.  It makes this list only because Jason wears a really neat-looking metallic mask in this one.
