 Deportes con Uncle Sanchez!

Historia de Jugadores de Beisbol

Hola personas,

-Bueno Dias muchachos, OYE!

  • It's been too long since I've had the opportunity to post my thoughts here at the Cafe, but with the one year mark approaching it seems like the perfect time to "jump back on the horse", so to speak and catch up with what I've been up to of late to those that are still visiting the site.  I'm not exactly sure if anyone will be seeing these posts since its been such a long time, but if not, at least I can use this forum to unload some of my thoughts and provide some daily (or weekly) insight.

  • I recently completed my fourth year at the University of Minnesota and am proud to say that I have graduated and I attended my ceremony this past Sunday.  Though I still have a couple of courses to complete, I expect to receive my B.A. diploma by the end of the year to make it official.  As someone who has not yet experienced marriage or having their first child, I would have to say that this was that first "real" milestone moment of my life so far, and one that I will carry with me always.  I'm sure there are some out there that would not put a lot of stock in this accomplishment, but I am not one of them.  I am proud, yet I also realize that there is a lot of work still in front of me before I can truly celebrate.  This qualifies as only the beginning of what I hope to accomplish in the next few months and years a head.

  • As for the ceremony itself, I found it to be a bittersweet experience.  I didn't much care for the long wait prior to walking into the auditorium.  It is no fun being crammed into a long, narrow hallway and standing in a line for 45 minutes sweating.  I would also be lying if I didn't mention the envy I felt at watching other graduates with their mob-like escorts and groupies afterward.  Never one for large crowds, I still couldn't help wishing that a relative or friend could have joined my parents at the event.  Still, knowing that it was Mother's Day, I was not going to be unrealistic in my expectations.  I was just glad to be to share this moment with my mother on her day.

  • Scheduling the ceremony on one of the busiest Sundays of the month was probably not the best idea in the world, however it didn't keep the auditorium from being packed to capacity.  I would have loved to share this moment with all of my close connections, but with limited room and the time of the year that it was, I knew that was not possible.  I look forward to seeing everyone that couldn't make it that day at my graduation get-together on July 21st.  Maybe those that I haven't heard from yet will be a little bit more forthcoming at that time.

  • People live busy lives, but sometimes a simple phone call or e-mail can go a long way in expressing one's support and good wishes.  After all we live in the age of text & instant messaging.  I really appreciated the messages I have received from some people the past few days.  Those seemingly simple, but classy gestures really mean a lot from where I stand.

  • Overall though it was a great time and I had the chance to get a lot of pictures taken before and afterward.  Next will come questions about where I plan to go from here.  Right now I'm taking things one day at a time.  The preliminary plan is to pursue my Masters, which would mean two more years of school.  In the mean time I would also like to get some kind of experience in writing for the campus in some type of forum in order to gain exposure.  Really the possibilities are endless and I hope to explore them in the summer months and into the fall.

  • I plan to send out my (somewhat late) announcements later this week to all the friends and family, but in the mean time I hope to be able to post updates and columns here at the Cafe more frequently throughout the summer.  I head to NYC later next week, so I will have another set of shots to post before then.

Your humble host, JSM.

The Lost Art of Loyalty in Today's America-

A very large epidemic is running rampant throughout much of the western world as we speak.  Its greatest strength is the fact that few, if any are aware of its growing abundance.  It isn't Mad Cow Disease, or even HIV--it is something much more simple.  It is called greed.  Like with most things that aren't good for us it comes in a variety of forms.

It is a common misconception that the rates of divorce have been rising drastically over the course of the last several years.  In reality, the rise in divorce peaked between the years 1978-1981.  Since then the rates have leveled off.  However, it is believed that this is due to the large number of baby-boomers who have been married for many years and in many cases are now grandparents.  Still, experts project that in the next ten to twenty years the divorce rate could skyrocket to unprecedented levels of near 50% due largely to the staggering number of divorces among those in their mid-thirties and younger.  This raises the question as to what is causing this drastic change in today's culture?

I think it is caused by a number of issues, but overwhelmingly greed and a devaluing of loyalty in society appear to be playing a large role in this growing problem.  All we simply have to do is look around us for proof of this claim.  The tabloids are filled with stories of hollywood couples gone bust after just a few years and sometimes just a few months of marriage.  It is no secret that the divorce rate among celebrities is off the charts-astounding.  Thus, a growingly cynical society has become accustomed and even numb to the idea that the easiest way to resolve a problem within the marriage is to terminate it.  In a era of high speed internet and fast food today's average person does not have the time or patience to sit down and work through a problem, instead they are merely looking for the quick fix that best suits their own needs.

Where does loyalty come in? The latetest statistics report that the level of infidelity in the U.S. is higher then it has ever been.  Among married men, 44% have reported cheating on their spouses, while 27% of married women have reported the same.  Both rates are higher then ever before.  The number one factor reported by couples (both men and women) leading to divorce was said to be due to a lack of communication.

The slow defacing of loyalty is not applied soley to that of marriage, it can be seen in the business world, as well.  We see sports teams releasing long-time players, who in many cases provided that organization with years of financial success and prestigue, only to be shown the door when cap space runs out or a raise is due.  We see star players who were given their chance by an organization to become the stars that they are leave for greener pastures at the first sight of cash and incentives, and leaving behind a fanbase that supported that player by purchasing tickets and merchandise -all without a second thought in a lot of cases.  Free agency in sports, without question creates buzz and excitement, however, it is also representative of the bigger state of our culture's growing mentality toward the disregard of the word "loyalty."

There is no question that we live in an era that is rapidly on the go.  But our future generation is also in danger of losing touch with one of our great values that helped make this country great.  I think its very important that we value what we have and to cease searching for that quick fix to interpersonal issues as though we were replacing our toaster.  Marriage, friendships, partnerships cannot exist forever if we continue to go a long this narrow  path that will lead to the extinction of the "L" word.  With it comes time and effort, but with that time we take, eventually will come reward and long-term satisfaction. Something more than a quick fix.

 1st Year Anniversary Month!!!

Grand Re-opening

Welcome patrons, this month marks the one year anniversary of this site (though admittedly communication has been a bit sparse over the last few months). However, fret not, because this month I plan on celebrating the anniversary by posting new and hopefully insightful articles, columes, and sketches that will provoke thought, amuse or perhaps both. I also plan to re-run some of the more popular posts of the last year in celebration of this mini milestone. So I hope you will come in and allow your mind to explore the wonderful amenities of the new JSM Cafe.
